What different perspectives are shown in the media, and what different perspectives could come from viewers?
CHARACTER PERSPECTIVES:
Shawn vs. Gus: Shawn and Gus are best friends on the show, but are actually very different people. Shawn is a man who is always goofy, and doesn't work very hard, though he is brilliant. However, opposing to Shawn, Gus is a man who works extremely hard at his job (outside of the agency) and is doing worse than Shawn. Gus joins in with the silliness, but is still required to work hard to be successful. So here, we have a person who is brilliant and succeeds without working hard, and a person who must work hard to succeed. Juliet: Juliet is a female cop in the show. She represents a powerful female figure, which most women love to see these days, and is still fairly rare in our world. Juliet successfully leads cases and is one of the head detectives in the SBPD. Juliet is hard-working but still manages to have fun and get things done. Juliet is a powerhouse and shows men what women can do. Here, we have a powerful female who works hard, succeeds, and shows men what women are capable of. Lassiter: Lassiter (or Lassie) is a serious, hardworking cop who doesn't like fooling around and jokes. He is tough and strict, and gets things done. Lassiter doesn't like Shawn's jokes or any other goofiness. He is the serous, Henry: Henry is Shawn's father. He is an ex-cop who still loves police work and supports his son (even though it doesn't seem like it sometimes). Henry shows us a perspective from an older person (an elder), and puts a different spin on things. Excluded Perspectives: Though this show contains many different perspectives, they exclude some like nerds, different races, "dumb" people, silly women, older women, children & teens, etc. |
VIEWER PERSPECTIVES:
Women vs. Men: Most women seem to really like Psych. It may be because they think the men are attractive, they love the humor, or they love the crime-fighting theme of the show. For the most part, women have a positive view on the show. However, some women may not like this show. It may be because all the main characters are men and women are not showcased too often in the show. Women could take both perspectives on the show, but mostly react positively to it. Men also seem to react positively to the show, however there are many men who don't like the show as well (more than there are women who don't like it). I believe it is because they are able to relate to the main characters. The fact that they do have so many different types of men on the show makes this possible. However, some men do not like the foolishness of the other men on the show. They seem to be humiliated and made fun of causing them to not like the show as much. Black vs. White (Race): The two main characters on the show are a black man and a white man. The white man, Shawn, does not really have any stereotypes. He is just really goofy, which seems to not be offensive to white guys specifically. The black man is Gus. Gus is basically a walking stereotype. He demonstrates many "black stereotypes" and may be found as offensive towards black people like him. There are also not many other black characters on the show, which may be offensive to black people. People from different races who watch the show may be offended by characters who are their race due to their actions (either silly or strict) or their hidden stereotypes. Others: People who may be found as similar to any of the characters in the show may have a negative or positive perspective on the show depending on if they like what the similar person does, or hate what the person does in the show. |
